History is littered with people, organizations, and nations, engaging in horrific, immoral behavior, ranging from genocide, to riots and killings, to massive greed, corruption and crimes against humanity. Why is it when faced with adversity we feel like we have to force a resolution at any cost?
.
Often, these are not the actions of individuals, but of groups led by a nefarious leaders.
.
All too often, we point the finger at the leader as the cause of the bad behavior, but without willing followers, the destruction would never occur.”
.
Here are 5 ways justification of bad behavior occurs:
.
Focusing on desired outcomes and rationalizing the means to achieve them. If we believe an outcome is necessary and we see no other way to achieve it we begin to believe that the “ends justify the means.” This is called “deactivation of moral standards,” according to ethicist Craig Johnson. This very easily leads to more occurrences of bad behavior.
.
Another way, according to Johnson, that we justify immoral behavior is through using “euphemistic language.” Also known as the “collateral damage.”clause. It is easier to imprison or execute someone if there is a belief of and larger threat to a group.
.
“Advantageous comparisons” is also a strategy used to downplay bad behavior by comparing it to the even worse behavior of others. “Yes I stole 5 dollars, but my friend stole 100”.
.
People also behave badly through “diffusion of responsibility”. This occurs during rioting or group misconduct. This is the “everyone was doing it”kind of thinking.
.
Perhaps most important of all is bad behavior by
way of lack of moral reasoning, through devaluing of the victims of our bad behavior.
.
I don’t often worry about offenses committed against me anymore. I feel compassion for people who practice bad behavior and think they have to go about using these kinds of tactics to get their way or what they think they need.
.
The universe does not work in this way. We quite literally reap what we sow.
.
We also tend to find what we seek. If we seek a just resolution we find a way to achieve a just resolution.
.
If we seek resolutions that are not just then we find those too. That is why history is littered with horrific immoral behavior. When faced with adversity the benefit of seeking just resolution far outweighs the justification of bad behavior. We have the regrets of bad behavior in our history to teach us that.
